Ryan Garcia Misses Weight, Haney Looks Drained: Weigh-in Results For Saturday

Published:

Ryan Garcia weighed in 3.2 lbs over the limit at 143.2 lbs, while WBC light welterweight champion Devin Haney came in at 140 lbs at Friday’s weigh-in for their 12-round headliner this Saturday, April 20th on DAZN PPV at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Fight Proceeds with Changes

Despite Ryan coming in overweight, the fight will still go ahead, but without Haney’s WBC 140-lb title being at stake.

Ryan (24-1, 20 KOs) drank what appeared to be a beer while he was standing on the scales in the ceremonial weigh-in in front of the media. It didn’t matter because Ryan had already weighed in earlier and came in overweight.

Haney had dark circles under both eyes, which some fans mistakenly attributed to being blackeyes from sparring. In reality, Haney is so drained, that’s taken a lot out of him, causing his eye sockets to turn a dark purple.

He’s expected to rehydrate to near 170, and that’s a lot of weight for a person to be losing for any amount of time without it showing up on their face. Hopefully, the massive shift in weight doesn’t leave him weakened for Saturday night’s fight.

Although fighters like Haney can drain themselves to fight well several divisions below their weight, they often pay the price for their reluctance to fight in the proper weight class for their frame. Whether that happens to Haney on Saturday night remains to be seen.

Promoter’s Predictions

“I expect Devin Haney to do the business, but I do believe Ryan Garcia will be dangerous,” said promoter Eddie Hearn to DAZN Boxing about Saturday night’s headliner fight. “Mentally, it is a tough spot for Devin. You don’t know what this guy is going to do next.

“It’s about the unpredictability of what he has been doing, and what he might do tomorrow night. He might come in there like an absolute lunatic and come straight for Devin an try and take him out in this fight. He might dance around and try to frustrate him.

“I don’t think he knows what he’s going to do, and that’s the danger of fighting someone like [that]. It gives him another layer to his game,” said Hearn about Ryan. “I think the cream will rise to the top in terms of the preparation, the ability.

“I believe don’t be surprised to see this man [Ryan Garcia] quit on his stool tomorrow night in this fight when the fight goes on. Just one of those no mas moments.”
