UFC on ESPN 54: Quick Picks and Prognostications

The main attraction on ESPN features a women’s flyweight fight between Erin Blanchfield and Manon Fiorot.

As stated in my in-depth breakdown, it’s dangerous to look at this fight as a striker vs. grappler affair.

Not only is Fiorot more lively than the odds indicate, but she displays excellent takedown defense off a whizzer and has quietly earned her Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt. However, Blanchfield — despite coming from a grappling base — has some deceptive high kick setups that could serve her well standing.

Outside of currently standing at 3-0 opposite UFC-level lefties, Blanchfield has a pressure-heavy style that seems to eventually break fighters down.

Although I suspect that Fiorot has the gas tank to go five rounds, I believe that Blanchfield’s style translates better over 25 minutes.

For that reason, I’ll semi-reluctantly side with Blanchfield to eventually capitalize on a Fiorot mistake and find a submission by round 4.
