UFC 300 video: Diego Lopes demolishes Sodiq Yusuff in less than 90 seconds

Diego Lopes was not getting paid by the hour at UFC 300.

In arguably his best performance to date, Lopes tore through Sodiq Yusuff in the first round with a pair of uppercuts that dropped the Nigerian born fighter to the canvas. The second knockdown led to Lopes quickly taking the back, flattening Yusuff out on the ground and then just unleashing a barrage of punches until referee Mark Smith had no choice but to stop the fight.

The end came at just 1:29 in the opening round.

“I know this was a very important fight for me,” Lopes said following his latest win. “I knew the result could not be any different. I’m going to be the champion of this division. I know my next step and I’m going to be the champion of the day. Movsar Evloev, let’s do it in Spain.”

Well known for his grappling prowess, Lopes showed no fear stepping into the pocket and exchanging with Yusuff on the feet. Lopes cracked Yusuff with a stiff uppercut that immediately set the tone for the fight as his opponent scrambled after falling to the canvas.

Yusuff survived long enough to get back to his feet but it was short lived success.

Lopes stayed in pursuit until he closed the distance and uncorked another hellacious uppercut that put Yusuff down again. From there, Lopes just mauled him on the canvas with relentless ground and pound to finish the fight.

After losing to Evloev in his debut on just five days’ notice, Lopes has gone 3-0 with three finishes and no opponent has made it past the two minute mark in the opening round. Lopes looks to be a force of nature in this division, especially after such an impressive showing on Saturday night on the biggest stage possible at UFC 300.
