Trains collide on Indonesia’s main island of Java, killing at least 3 people

NEW DELHI: A tragic train collision on Java Island’s main railway line near Cicalengka station in Bandung city in Indonesia resulted in at least three deaths and several injuries on Friday. The accident, involving two trains, has raised concerns over the safety of Indonesia’s aging railway network.
The collision involved the Turangga Express train, traveling from Surabaya to Bandung, and a commuter train en route from Cicalengka to Padalarang.West Java Police spokesperson Ibrahim Tompo confirmed the casualties and noted several injuries.
Ayep Hanapi, spokesperson for PT Kereta Api Indonesia, the national railway company, reported that the incident occurred about 500 meters from Cicalengka station in West Java.

Television footage showed the aftermath of the collision, with several carriages either overturned or severely damaged. One of the carriages was seen plummeting into an adjacent rice field, adding to the chaos and panic among passengers and bystanders.
Survivors, some in shock and carrying their belongings, were seen evacuating the site, with ambulances rushing the injured to nearby hospitals. Hery Marantika, the head of Bandung’s Search and Rescue Agency, informed that approximately 106 passengers from the commuter train and 54 from the Turangga were rescued in the operation.
The cause of the collision is under investigation, with officials scrutinizing every aspect of the incident to determine its origin. This accident highlights the ongoing issues with Indonesia’s railroad infrastructure, which has been plagued by frequent accidents, particularly at crossings.
The Indonesian government has faced growing calls to modernize and improve railway safety standards to prevent future tragedies. This incident serves as a somber reminder of the urgent need for infrastructure development and enhanced safety measures in the country’s public transportation systems.
