A defense ministry official stated during a briefing, “Around 200 shots were discharged by North Korea in the vicinity of Yeonpyeong Island,” while local officials from Yeonpyeong informed that civilians were advised to leave the area.
This decision follows a newspaper report indicating that the South Korean military plans to recommence live-fire drills in the area.
Yeonpyeong Island, situated close to the border, has faced persistent threats from the neighboring North Korea.
In 2010, Yeonpyeong Island experienced a barrage of artillery fire from North Korea, resulting in the death of four individuals, including two civilians. This incident marked one of the most severe attacks on its neighboring South Korea since the conclusion of the Korean War in 1953.
North Korea claimed that it was provoked to carry out the attack due to South Korean live-fire drills, which allegedly dropped shells into North Korean territorial waters.
