Boxing expert Rick Glaser says he’s hearing rumors about PBC and their fighters, one of them being superstar, Canelo Alvarez, over “guarantor for his purse” for his next fight on May 4th, raising doubts about whether that event on Cinco de Mayo will take place.
Canelo’s Purse Controversy
Glaser notes on X that “PBC has been dead silent about May 4 with no announcement,” which is not a good sign given that it’s less than three months away.
Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) is supposed to be getting a massive purse for the May 4th fight, which could be against Jermall Charlo. Will the money be there for Canelo?
If not, where will the Mexican star go, and when will he fight? Canelo has got to be a little concerned about it himself if he’s not receiving info from PBC.
You can’t expect a superstar like the undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo to sit on the shelf not fighting. It’ll be interesting to see what happens if he misses out on his May 4th date, and is left empty-handed with no fight.
Glaser remarks about representatives from Amazon not being present at the kickoff press conference to announce the March 30th event, headlined by Keith Thurman vs. Tim Tszyu in Las Vegas.
Amazon is the official broadcaster for the Tszyu-Thurman event on March 30th, so it was worrying that they were absent from the press conference and hadn’t begun marketing the event.
“Why no marketing from Amazon for that event,” says Glaser. “There are too many negative signs to ignore.” Is Amazon committed to its new partnership with PBC?
Obviously, the lack of marketing is a red flag that something may not be right. Is Amazon going to wait before they start advertising the Thurman vs. Tszyu event on their site?
It makes you wonder if this event will be a success on PPV if it even happens. Waiting until the last minute to market this event won’t work for this level of a fight because it’s already a mediocre clash between an inactive 35-year-old Thurman, who has fought just once in the last five years, and the Australian Tszyu, who casual boxing fans in the U.S have never heard of.
