Papa Haney Is Still Salty About Ryan Garcia’s Weight Games

Published:

Devin Haney’s dad, Bill, is still salty about his son’s embarrassing loss to Ryan Garcia, and he’s now calling him a “cheater” for coming in overweight at the weigh-in the day before their fight on April 20th. Bill is just not letting it go and giving Ryan the “cheater” label.

Papa Haney thinks Ryan (25-1, 20 KOs) came in weight on purpose to have a weight advantage, even though he made it known that he’d worked as hard he could to get down to 140, but he couldn’t take off the last 3.2 lbs.

Ryan already forked over $1.5 million to Haney (31-1, 15 KOs) for coming in overweight, but Bill isn’t satisfied.

Bill’s Big “What If”

Bill Haney told Boxingscene that he regretted “not enforcing the three pounds” that Garcia missed weight by the weigh-in. “That’s calculated. That’s cheating.”

If Bill had tried to push Ryan by putting his feet to the fire to have him weigh in on the day of the fight for a secondary weight check, like the one Gervonta Davis had done, he would have backed out instantaneously, leaving Devin stuck defending his WBC light welterweight title against Arnold Barboza Jr., who was Golden Boy’s standpoint fighter.

I think Ryan would have done the same thing to Haney, even if he had agreed to the fight date secondary weigh-in that Bill wanted him to take.

If Bill had demanded a rehydration limit of 10 lbs, Devin would have had to have weighed in as well, and it would have impacted him just as much.

Haney’s Career: Not Looking Hot

Devin’s career is not looking good right now after his performance. Bill needs to figure out which direction to take Devin because he’s not going to get the rematch with Ryan that he’s been asking for.

If Haney is going to hold onto his WBC light welterweight title, he’ll need to defend against his mandatory Sandor Martin next. That’s a winnable fight for Haney, but a difficult one that he’ll struggle in.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Haney loses to Martin because that guy has a right hook that he used to drop Teofimo Lopez twice, and arguably beat him in 2022.
