The horror attack happened on Avenida Eugenio Rijo Rocha in Arrecife on Saturday when the kidnapper, a Czech national approached the woman holding her granddaughter.

The attacker forcefully tried to take the tot but the woman bravely fought back, Canaria Weekly reports.

After his failed attempt to kidnap the child, he tried to flee the scene, leaving the woman on the ground with injuries to her face.

He was later apprehended by eyewitnesses from a nearby café who heard the woman crying for help.

They managed to hold him down until police arrived to take him into custody.

The kidnapper, identified by the La Voz de Lanzarote by the initials T.V. is apparently known in the area.

Both the woman and the baby suffered minor injuries in the attack and were taken to hospital.

It comes after a British baby died after a “drunk and drugged up” driver ploughed into a group of pedestrians in Lanzarote.

The parents and grandparents of the five-month-old and a mum and daughter from Sweden were also injured after a vehicle mounted the pavement in the popular resort of Playa Blanca.

Little Harper Ayton died while on holiday with her parents in Lanzarote when an alleged drunk driver mowed down two families.
