‘Israel has not done enough..’: Biden calls out ally over deaths of humanitarian workers


NEW DELHI: US President Joe Biden expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the deaths of seven World Central Kitchen (WCK) humanitarian workers in Gaza. He criticized Israel for failing to adequately protect aid workers in the area, as per an official statement from the White House.
Biden, in his address said, “I am outraged and heartbroken by the deaths of seven humanitarian workers from World Central Kitchen, including one American, in Gaza yesterday.They were providing food to hungry civilians in the middle of a war. They were brave and selfless. Their deaths are a tragedy.”
President Biden emphasized that Israel has promised a thorough investigation into the airstrikes that targeted the aid workers’ vehicles. He stressed the importance of a swift and transparent investigation that ensures accountability and public disclosure of its findings.
Biden also highlighted the challenges faced in delivering humanitarian aid in Gaza due to the recurrent incidents of aid workers losing their lives. He vowed to exert pressure on Israel to facilitate aid delivery and push for an immediate ceasefire.
“The United States will continue to do all we can to deliver humanitarian assistance to Palestinian civilians in Gaza, through all available means. I will continue to press Israel to do more to facilitate that aid. And we are pushing hard for an immediate ceasefire as part of a hostage deal. I have a team in Cairo working on this right now,” Biden’s statement read.
Following reports of the tragic incident, where seven members of the World Central Kitchen team were killed in an Israeli strike, the organization suspended its operations in Gaza.
The casualties included a US-Canadian dual citizen, as confirmed by a US official.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged that the military “unintentionally struck innocent people” and expressed regret over the unintended harm caused to innocent individuals by the military.
The Israel Defence Forces pledged to conduct a thorough investigation at the highest levels in response to the tragic event.
