Hearn: Edwards-Nontshinga Is A Massive Fight, We Can Make It Happen This Year

Published:

Promoter Eddie Hearn has stated that a fight between Sivenathi Nontshinga and Sunny Edwards “is definitely one we could look to make in the summer.”

Nontshinga reclaimed the IBF light flyweight world title with a superb 10th round stoppage over Adrian Curiel last week in Oaxaca, Mexico.

The South African lost his belt to underdog Curiel last November, being stopped in just the second round.

“Great stoppage by Nontshinga. Weathered the storm and took his man out of there. I want two time too @EddieHearn.” Edwards said on X shortly after the result in Mexico.

“Sunny wants to fight everyone,” Hearn said, in an exclusive interview. “He wants to fight [Nonito] Donaire, he wants to fight Nontshinga. I think realistically, Sunny talks about becoming a two division world champion, he’s got a fight right there against Nontshinga.”

Edwards would be moving down from flyweight if he were to face Nontshinga for his title.

The Englishman won the IBF flyweight world title against Moruti Mthalane in April 2021. He defended his belt four times until losing in a unification bout with Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez last December in Glendale, Arizona.

“He could [move down to light flyweight] but it is tough, it is tough,” Hearn added. “But him and Nontshinga is a big fight and is definitely one we could look to make in the summer.”
