The highlight video of last Saturday’s fight between WBC light welterweight champion Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia shows an ugly picture of utter domination from start to finish, with Dev getting the brakes beaten out of him at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The beating is bad enough to make you wince.
Round 1: The Moment It All Went Wrong
Haney may have realized that he’d underestimated Ryan as early as the first round when he was clocked by a hard left hook, and badly wobbled from the shot.
It was too late for Haney (31-1, 15 KOs) to cut and run, and his attempts to fight off the superior-armed Garcia (25-1, 20 KOs) proved to be futile.
After that opening round, Haney’s legs looked weak, and without his mobility, he was forced to brawl with Ryan, and he had no chance of winning that kind of fight.

Haney didn’t have the right game plan for the power and speed that Ryan brought to the table.
Plan B: “Run for Your Life!”
When Haney tried to switch to his plan B by running after round seven, it was no use because Ryan quickly pursued him and walloped him with heavy shots wherever he went inside the ring.
After the way Haney was handled, his ego may not have survived this fight, and he’d be asking for trouble taking a rematch with Ryan. A second fight would likely be far worse for Haney, and what’s left of his diminished career would be permanently down the drain.
“I told him in the changing room after the fight, ‘I thought you boxed really poorly tonight. I don’t feel like you looked like you had your strength. I felt like you didn’t look sharp. How many times did you get hit with a left hook, because as you said you know when you fight Ryan Garcia? ‘” Promoter Eddie Hearn told Fighthype about what he told Devin Haney after his fight with Ryan Garcia last Saturday.
“Ryan is smart with it, but the number of times he got hit with it. Don’t forget that when you get hurt in a fight, the engine starts to go and you start to make mistakes. That was one of the things with Devin. That engine deceived him in there.
“I’d like to know more about how he made weight, how that went, and how his camp went because I just felt it was a poor performance from him, but he was fighting a much bigger man in there and it showed,” said Hearn.
