Fact check: ‘The Simpsons’ did not predict Trump’s assassination

The popular animated series “The Simpsons” did not predict the assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump in 2024, despite several images circulating online following the incident at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Matt Selman, an executive producer and showrunner for the show, confirmed to Reuters that the image depicting Trump in a coffin with the text “RIP Donald Trump 1946 – 2024” is doctored and never appeared in an actual episode.
The fabricated image has been shared on social media platforms since at least 2017, with variations of the supposed prediction surfacing over the years. Some versions of the image feature different text on the coffin, such as “NEVER FORGET 7-16-2018,” referencing Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Finland on July 16, 2018.

The assassination attempt on Trump occurred on Saturday (July 14) during a rally in Pennsylvania. Shots were fired at the former president, and while he was quickly escorted off stage by security personnel, the bullet grazed his right ear. One attendee was killed, and two others were injured in the incident.

In the wake of the attack, world leaders expressed their shock and condemned the act of violence. However, some social media users began spinning conspiracy theories, with one popular theory claiming that “The Simpsons” had predicted the assassination attempt on Trump.
Screenshots from the alleged episode were shared online, with users suggesting that the show, known for its satirical portrayal of American life and uncanny predictions, had foreseen the incident.
In his first remarks following the shooting incident, Donald Trump recounted, “I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin.”
Trump expressed his gratitude, saying, “I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response to the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania. Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured.”
The former president emphasised the gravity of the situation, saying, “It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, and shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realised then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA.”
