Euro News: Gallia Dies at 83, Nielsen Debuts, Schwarz Out Against Aumada

Italian great Tommaso Galli has passed away at the age of 83. Galli won the EBU title in three different weight divisions beginning at bantamweight in 1965 when he beat Mimoun Ben Ali. He lost the title in a rematch but in between he outscored Walter McGowan. 

In 1969 he stopped Spaniard Manuel Calvo in the 15th and final round to win the EBU featherweight title and also beat Calvo in a rematch before losing to the great Jose Legra. 

In 1971 he won the EBU super feather title with a points win over German Lotha

Danish amateur star Nikki Moeller Nielsen will make his professional debut on May 25 at the Royal Arena in Copenhagen. Nielsen, who is both a Danish and Nordic champion, will campaign as a super middleweight.

Also on the bill are brothers Ali and Hamza Hussein. Ali, a middleweight, is 9-2-1 while Hamza, a cruiserweight, is 6-0 as well as heavyweight Mathias Hansen (5-0).

Topping the bill is again Dina Thorslund, defending the WBC and WBO titles against Seren Cetin.

German heavy Tom Schwarz (29-1) is out of the fight against Argentinian Marcos Antonio Aumada (25-13) on May 4 in Leverkusen. There is no reason given as to why he has pulled out but the promoter, No Limit Boxing headed by Bekim Hoxhaj, has brought in Hassan El Chade (5-0) as a substitute.

In the co-feature Elif Nur Turhan (7-0) will meet Iara Altamirano (9-1-1) in a fight for the WBA Gold title at super featherweight.

Finnish cruiser Samuli Karkkainen (18-2) will return to action June 1 in Jarvenpaa in his first fight since losing controversially to Kevin Melhus in November. Samuli has since served as sparring partner for Arsen Goulamirian in Big Bear, California. Who Karkkainen is fighting has yet to be announced.

In the co-feature, heavyweights Mika Mielonen (8-1) and Gunnar Kolbeinn Kristinsson (14-0) clash in a fight for the vacant Baltic Boxing Union title.

Just for the record: Husein Cinkara won an IBF eliminator at cruiserweight when he stopped Armend Xhoxhaj April 27 in Nuremberg.
