Devin Haney still has questions that need answering heading into his showdown with Ryan Garcia.
Haney and Garcia will fight for Haney’s WBC super lightweight title on Saturday, April 20 from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on DAZN.
Haney (31-0, 15 KOs), has been steadfast in his training while Garcia’s build-up has been played out on social media.
GQ Sports released a video in their one-on-one series, Haney and Garcia, (24-1, 20 KOs), sat down and Haney admitted: “I don’t know if Ryan Garcia is taking the fight seriously or not. That is not something for me to pay too much attention to.”
Garcia’s erratic behavior has been the talking point of the build-up and, if he wins, his star will rise but if he loses Garcia will have egg on his face.
Haney believes the latter will happen.
“The world is going to see me beat down Ryan Garcia [and] get him out of boxing,” said Haney. “He is definitely not a good role model or a guy the younger generation should be looking at – they should be looking at guys like me.
“I am trying to compete with myself,” added Haney. “[This fight is] bigger than Ryan Garcia. It is bigger than any opponent. I am in there competing against myself.”
Although Haney is fighting Garcia based on his old amateur rival’s popularity amongst non-traditional fight fans, Haney is treating Saturday’s bout as another step toward his ultimate goal and a plaque in the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
