- The Super Bowl trailer for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ has dropped.
- Ryan Reynolds returns as the Merc with a Mouth.
- The movie lands in theaters this July.
Given the history of the ‘Deadpool’ movies, we knew to expect a couple of big things from ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ (as the third film is now titled): rude humor from Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson and the fourth wall not so much being broken as smashed, set on fire and then urinated upon to put it out.
Which is pretty much what we got in this very fun first trailer, which dropped (also as expected) during this year’s Super Bowl.

What’s the story of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine?
Though there is still no official synopsis for the movie online, we were primed to expect the franchise to address the fact that the Deadpool character can now be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (following the last two being obviously set in the X-Men/20th Century Fox arm of Marvel).
And indeed it does, as Wade, trying to enjoy a relatively normal moment with his beloved Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) and friends celebrating his birthday when he’s rudely interrupted by troopers from the Time Variance Authority, the timeline monitors seen in ‘Loki’.
Matthew McFadyen here plays a bureaucrat who informs Wade that he’s needed to be a “hero… among heroes” in the MCU. Wade, who has decided he’s “Marvel Jesus” is in. But it’s not going to be smooth –– especially his first encounter with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine (who we only glimpse in shadow until he stabs our foul-mouthed hero).
Director Shawn Levy, who made the movie as just his latest collaboration with Reynolds, would not be drawn on spoilers, as he explained to Deadline:
“I so cherish my friendship with Ryan Reynolds, and it would be so sad if it ended in murder. And if I answered you with anything Deadpool related, it would end with my untimely death, and that would be so sad.”
Who else is in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’?
Several of the cast from the first two ‘Deadpool’ movies are returning for this one alongside Baccarin with Brianna Hildebrand, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni and Rob Delaney all aboard, joined by new recruits Emma Corrin and McFadyen (Corrin’s is still a mystery, though reportedly a villain).
Oh, and that’s ‘X2: X-Men United’s Aaron Stanford popping up as the mutant Pyro. Note also the giant Twentieth Century Fox logo sitting in ruins near Wade –– told you this was meta!
When will ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ be in theaters?
‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is looking to defile your nearest movie theater on July 26th.
