Chantelle Cameron And Matchroom Part Ways

Published:

It has been confirmed that former undisputed super lightweight champion, Chantelle Cameron, and Matchroom Boxing have parted ways.

On Wednesday (May 1st) Matchroom took to X and issued the following statement;

“Matchroom Boxing can today confirm that we reached an agreement last month to release Chantelle Cameron from her promotional deal. We would like to wish Chantelle all the best in her future endeavours.”

The 32-year-old Cameron, 18-1 (8 KOs), replied to the post, simply writing, “Thank you”

Cameron signed with Matchroom back in July 2020 and quickly scooped up the WBC super lightweight title by beating Adriana Dos Santos Araujo. The following May she unified the division by outclassing IBF champion, Victoria Bustos, and then outpointed the tough Jessica McCaskill to become the undisputed champion at 140lbs.

In May 2023, Cameron took her titles to Dublin for a long awaited fight with Irish legend, Katie Taylor. She produced a career best performance, boxing and fighting her way to a dominant victory – despite the closeness of the scorecards – and inflicting the first professional defeat of Taylor’s career.

Six months later, the pair met in an inevitable rematch. Despite heading into the fight as a sizeable underdog, 37-year-old Taylor was sensational and hustled Cameron out of her titles.

After the fight, Cameron – already unhappy about having had to once again travel to Dublin – hit out about the officiating and also voiced her complaints about the reaction of Matchroom chairman, Eddie Hearn, to Taylor’s victory, believing that Hearn displayed clear favouritism towards her rival.

Relations appear to have been cordial since the turn of the year and at one point, Hearn stated that he believed a trilogy fight could be made but it wasn’t to be and news of the split comes hot on the heels of Taylor’s decision to move forward with a lucrative rematch with Amanda Serrano rather than settling matters with Cameron.

Taylor and Serrano will renew hostilities on July 20th at the cavernous AT & T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The fight will be streamed globally on Netflix and act as the main support bout to the now professional heavyweight fight between YouTube star turned professional boxer, Jake Paul, and the 58-year-old former ‘Baddest Man On The Planet’ Mike Tyson – a sentence which gets no easier to type.

Cameron – who recently joined up with Sheffield-based trainer, Grant Smith, after ending a successful professional spell with Jamie Moore – remains one of the biggest names in female boxing and will now explore her options.
