Canelo Vs. Munguia: Negotiations Underway For May Showdown

Undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez and Jaime Munguia are reportedly in negotiations for a fight on May 4th. If the fight gets made, it would be a tremendous blockbuster in the U.S. and Mexico.

Inside the Talks

Salvador Rodriguez of ESPN Knockout reports that Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) and Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) are in talks for a fight in May. If it gets made, this match-up could air on Amazon Prime PPV and possibly DAZN.

“Jaime Munguía returned to the negotiating table for a possible fight against Canelo Álvarez in May,” said Salvador Rodriguez on X.

Munguia is coming off a ninth-round knockout win over John Ryder on January 27th in a good performance. After the fight, Munguia called out Canelo in the ring, doing it respectably rather than bad-mouthing him.

This means that Canelo has changed his mind about facing Jermall Charlo in May, as some had thought he would.

That might be a good thing for WBC interim super middleweight champion David Benavidez, considering he and his dad, Jose Sr., have been pushing for the fight against Canelo for ages.

Fan Excitement Builds

Canelo vs. Munguia will be huge in Mexico, where both fighters have huge fan bases. Munguia isn’t as popular in the United States, though, as casual fans haven’t seen him fight.

Munguia has built a 43-0 record with the help of Golden Boy and his promoter. The main criticism that Munguia has received over the years by fans is his weak resume. Munguia’s best wins as a professional during his 11-year career are against these fighters:

  • John Ryder
  • Liam Smith
  • Gary O’Sullivan
  • Sergiy Derevyanchenko

If Canelo fights Munguia in May, he could then face Benavidez in September.  That would be the logical move for Canelo, unless he chooses to face Jermall in September.

In that case, Benavidez would be out of luck, and would have to hope that Canelo faces him in 2025, with a new contract with PBC if they choose to sign the Mexican star for an extension.
