‘Canelo carried him’: Pros react to Canelo Alvarez humbling undefeated Jaime Munguia

Published:

Canelo Alvarez isn’t passing that torch just yet.

In the first-ever undisputed championship bout featuring two Mexican fighters, Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) and Jaime Munguia (43-1, 34 KOs) didn’t disappoint, going back-and-forth for an entertaining 12 rounds that saw Alvarez pull away as the fight progressed. Alvarez won a unanimous decision to retain his super middleweight titles.

It was touch and go in the early stages of the fight, but Alvarez completely changed the complexion of the fight with a knockdown off of a stiff uppercut in Round 4. Munguia continued to put on a valiant effort, but never managed to muster enough sustained offense to win over the judges or put a scare in the legendary Alvarez.

Alvarez’s impressive power was on display throughout the contest and though he couldn’t add Munguia to his knockout tally, there was little doubt that he was the better boxer when the final bell rang.
