Published:

POLICE in Majorca have arrested an Italian man on suspicion of raping a British woman on a beach near Magaluf.

The alleged victim said a 20-year-old man forced himself on her after a night out in Palmanova, which borders the famous party resort.

It is not yet known whether the woman, 38, was a holidaymaker or lived in the area.

A spokesman for the Civil Guard in Majorca said today: “The Civil Guard in Calvia has arrested an Italian man aged 20 as the suspected author of a crime of sexual assault on a woman aged 38.

“Last week, the alleged victim and suspect coincided in a late-night bar in Palmanova.”

The spokesman said the man allegedly took advantage of the woman when the bar closed, taking her to the beach and raping her there.

He continued: “Officers began an investigation and managed to identify and locate the alleged offender.”

The day of the alleged sex attack has not yet been specified.

Detectives could not say today whether the unnamed Italian had been remanded in custody by an investigating magistrate during a subsequent court appearance pending an ongoing criminal probe, or had been remanded in custody.

Court officials could not be reached for comment.

It comes after police on the island confirmed last Tuesday that they were investigating the alleged gang-rape of a Brazilian woman at a rented apartment in Playa de Palma, east of the Majorcan capital.

Four Italian suspects aged 24 to 27 were held over the alleged attack and later sent to jail on remand by a judge.
