Ukrainian with half his skin burned off is dubbed ‘world’s hardest dad’ after ditching rehab to join sons back on front

A FEARLESS Ukrainian soldier who suffered burns to almost half of his skin has ditched rehab to join his sons back on the frontline.

Oleksandr R, 55, was severely hurt after a Russian drone blasted his trench in Ukraine.

He was taken to Germany for treatment and has been recovering at the Hanover Medical School since January.

After several operations, the brave dad began walking again and took strolls through the clinic park with his partner Svetlana, 40.

But despite medics telling him still needs to spend time recuperating, the dad is now heading back to the trenches to battle against Russians.

Oleksandr – who still finds it hard to move his fingers – will be fighting alongside his son and stepson.

His partner had been at his bedside since he was moved to Lower Saxony in January and she fears for her children, named only as Viatcheslav R, 20, and Dimitri R, 18.

While Oleksandr was at the clinic, the two boys were drafted into military service.

The intrepid soldier told German media: “They are now fighting in the same unit that I was in.

“I won’t let them down, I want to fight alongside them against the Russian aggressor as quickly as possible.”

Putin’s chilling pincer plan to seize Donbas in WEEKS – push for Kharkiv is a feint to capture prized Ukrainian region once and for all

After just five months of treatment, he boarded a train along with Svetlana on Tuesday to head back to Ukraine.

Before leaving, Olexandr thanked the doctors, and said: “They saved my life and got me fit again so quickly. I am very grateful for that.

“It was great here in Germany and I would love to come back. With my sons when there is finally peace again in Ukraine!”

Olexandr, who worked as a taxi driver before the war, still had several weeks of rehabilitation ahead of him in Germany.

It comes amid fears Vladimir Putin is plotting to seize the Donbas region in just weeks as he distracts Kyiv’s forces on the northern front.

The new offensive in Kharkiv could be Moscow’s ultimate deception – stretch and distract Ukraine to finally conquer the prized eastern region as early as June.

Professor Michael Clarke, former director of the UK think-tank RUSI, argued that in coming weeks the Kremlin’s troops will pound the Donbas from the north and south in a pincer movement to take it all.

US rushes in military aid & Zelensky cancels trips: The latest on Russia’s new offensive

The US has rushed through military aid after Ukraine admitted its forces were on the retreat in areas and President Volodymyr Zelensky cancelled all upcoming foreign trips.

This is the latest on the major new Russian offensive in the Kharkiv region of northeastern Ukraine.

Vladimir Putin has massed more than half a million troops on the northeastern front in a bid to overpower Kyiv’s stretched defences and battle-weary troops.

Ukraine is desperately trying to hold the line, but Russia has a significant advantage in manpower and munitions and is pushing their advantage, seizing miles of ground in days.

The blitz, said to be the first stage of Russia’s summer offensive, is designed to finally break through the stalemate by throwing troops into human wave assaults.

Royal United Services Institute war expert Dr Jack Watling told The Sun that unless Ukraine could muster more troops its prospects were bleak as Russia had “significant numerical superiority”.

Kyiv said the Russian push appeared to have run out of steam on Tuesday — but, in the face of Putin’s 500,000-strong force, warned that could change quickly.

On Wednesday, Moscow claimed its forces have pushed deeper into the Kharkiv region and captured the symbolic town of Robotyne – one of the only prizes of Ukraine’s muted summer counteroffensive.

Speaking to The Sun, he said that for over a month Russian forces have been stretching Ukraine all along its 600-mile front “putting pressure everywhere all at once”.

In a bid to beat Western weapons shipments arriving allowing Ukraine to strengthen its defences, Russia is on a “timetable to get something in the bag quick,” Clarke said.

“It’s a big semi circle and they’re trying to attack everywhere all at once,” he argued.

But the Kremlin’s ultimate plan, Clarke argued, is to once and for all conquer the whole Donbas region in Ukraine’s east.

On May 10, Russia kicked off a major new offensive in the northeast in the Kharkiv region after massing more than half a million troops that looked set to march west.

Ukraine is desperately trying to hold the line as Moscow throws troops into meatgrinder assaults, seizing key villages and towns in its fastest advance for months.

And yet, Clarke believes this is a cruel deception, designed to draw Kyiv’s troops north while the majority of Moscow’s troops actually prepare to swing east and march south.

He said: “It’s a two-pronged offensive as I see it.”

1.8 tonnes of methamphetamine seized from major Mexican drugs cartel | World News

Spanish police say they have dismantled a drug distribution network run by a major South American cartel after seizing 1.8 tonnes of methamphetamine.

The Sinaloa cartel was using vehicles with false bottoms to send illegal drugs on to other European countries, Spain’s National Police said.

Officers, who had doubted the cartel was established in Spain, made five arrests after raiding six properties in the Valencia region.

Those detained included a Mexican national thought to be the group’s leader, as well as three Spanish people and one Romanian, police said.

Methamphetamine, also known as crystal meth, is a “highly addictive stimulant that affects the central nervous system”, according to the US government’s National Institute on Drug Abuse.

It “takes the form of a white, odourless, bitter-tasting crystalline powder” and “easily dissolves in water or alcohol”, the institute says.

The 1.8 tonne haul is the largest confiscation of methamphetamine ever made in Spain, police said.

Officer Antonio Martínez said it signalled the “eradication of this group”.

“We in the National Police thought the Mexican cartels were not established in Spain,” he said.

He added: “But it is true that due to the pressure they are under in other parts of Europe, above all against their laboratories, we are seeing how they are trying to start operations or set up illegal laboratories in Spain to produce drugs.”

The investigation continues and officers said there could be further arrests.

Turkish court sentenced Kurdish leader to 42 years over 2014 unrest

A Turkish court sentenced an ex-leader of the pro-Kurdish HDP party to 42 years in prison on Thursday for his alleged involvement in the fatal riots that broke out in 2014 as jihadists from the Islamic State group overran the Syrian town of Kobane.

Issued on:

Already jailed since 2016, Selahattin Demirtas, 51, a two-time election rival to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was convicted for dozens of crimes including undermining state unity and the country’s integrity.

The court in Sincan on the outskirts of the capital Ankara also sentenced HDP’s former co-chair Figen Yuksekdag to 30 years and three months, private broadcaster NTV and rights group MLSA reported.

The court ordered the release of some politicians including Gultan Kisanak, former mayor of major pro-Kurdish city Diyarbakir in the southeast, but many others were handed jail terms.

The case against former members of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), including Demirtas and Yuksekdag, stems from one of the darker episodes of the more than decade-long Syria war.

Thirty-seven people died in violent protests against the Turkish army’s inaction in the face of an IS offensive against the largely Kurdish northern Syrian town.

The fighting was visible from the Turkish side of the border and many in the country’s Kurdish community viewed the army as complicit in the humanitarian disaster that followed.

The jihadists were driven out of Kobane in January 2015 by US-backed Syrian Kurdish fighters that Turkey officially views as terrorists.

Turkey views the HDP as the political front of outlawed Kurdish militants who have been waging an insurgency that has claimed tens of thousands of lives since 1984.

The HDP blamed Turkish police for causing the deaths.

In 2023 testimony, Demirtas slammed the case against him as a “revenge” trial.

“There’s no single evidence about me. This is a case of political revenge, we were not legally arrested, we are all political hostages,” he said.

Demirtas has been in jail in the western city of Edirne since 2016, facing multiple trials on terror-related charges that Western governments view as part of Erdogan’s crackdown on political dissent.

The European Court of Human Rights has repeatedly called for his release.

‘Black stain’

The court verdict against former leaders and members of the HDP — which faces a court case that could result in it being shut down — sparked protests.

Lawmakers from the DEM Party, which has replaced HDP in parliament, unfurled former party leaders’ portraits during a session in parliament on Thursday, tapping the tables in a show of protest while the party used the social media hashtag “Kobane is our honour.”

Diyarbakir governor’s office banned any protest in the city for four days.

DEM Party’s co-chair Tuncer Bakirhan slammed the verdict as “black stain in the history of Turkish justice.”

“We all witnessed a legal massacre here today,” Bakirhan said.

“Kurds and revolutionaries were tried to be erased from the political scene,” he added.

Prosecutors accused the 108 defendants of “attacking the integrity of the state”, and of crimes including looting and murder.

They sought an aggravated life sentence for 36 suspects including Demirtas on charges of attacking state unity and the country’s integrity.

Defence lawyers said they would appeal the verdict, which came after Erdogan spoke of a “softening” in politics, after his Islamic-rooted party suffered a historic defeat in the March 31 local elections.

“The politics in Turkey needs softening. We will do our part as before,” he said in an address on Wednesday.

The issue of political prisoners including leading civil society leader Osman Kavala reportedly came up during Erdogan’s rare meeting on May 2 with opposition CHP leader Ozgur Ozel, whose party retained the control of large cities including Istanbul and made major gains in the March vote.

On Thursday, an Istanbul court however rejected a request for Kavala to be retried.

The Paris-born philanthropist was arrested in October 2017 and sentenced to life in 2022 for allegedly trying to topple Erdogan’s government.

Opening in theaters on May 17th is the new thriller ‘You Can’t Run Forever’, which stars Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons (‘Whiplash’) and was co-written and directed by his wife, Michelle Schumacher (‘I’m Not Here’).

The cast also includes Fernanda Urrejola (‘Blue Miracle’), Isabelle Anaya (‘Donny’s Bar Mitzvah’), Graham Patrick Martin (‘Major Crimes’), and Simmons and Schumacher’s daughter, Olivia Simmons (‘Junk Food’).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with J.K. Simmons about his work on ‘You Can’t Run Forever’, his first reaction to the screenplay, his approach to the character, collaborating on set with his wife, acting opposite his daughter, and working with Isabelle Anya, as well as looking back at shooting ‘The Accountant’ with Ben Affleck and teasing the upcoming sequel, ‘The Accountant 2’.

Moviefone: To begin with, at what point did you get involved with this project and what was your first reaction to Michelle and Carolyn Carpenter’s screenplay?

J.K. Simmons: Well, with everything Michelle’s done, including things she’s working on now, I always prefer not to have too many conversations about the story as it’s developing and wait for a somewhat finished first draft to wrap my head around. We did talk about some of the developmental things of this story, specifically about my character and if we would ever know anything about his motivation or what drove him to what we see him doing or is he just a complete psychopath and always has been. Once she and Carolyn Carpenter, her writing partner made the decision to delve into a bit of that psychology, I found that the way that they examine where this guy is coming from to be smart, clever, surprising, interesting and revealing about him and about us as humanity on this planet. Which at the end of the day is what this movie is about, to me, is the human condition and Fernanda Urrejola’s character as the mom, how the power of her love is paramount.

MF: Can you talk about how the character’s backstory helped you understand Wade’s motivations?

Simmons: Yeah, and it’s always, for me, with somebody like this or other truly evil characters that I’ve played in the past, it’s necessary for me to understand. You can’t justify, but you can begin to wrap your brain around the psychology of what makes someone do such terrible things. This was very clear to me, and that’s something that I look for in any project, whether it’s a more lighthearted thing or something intense like this is just, can I believe and begin to understand where this guy is coming from?

MF: Can you talk about your approach to playing a character as evil and despicable as Wade?

Simmons: Well, being despicable is great. But I mean that’s such a big part of the joy and the variety of what we get to do as actors is to not be pigeonholed and not do the same thing repeatedly. I feel like most character actors, like you want to be able to exercise or exorcise, in this case, some demons. You want to be able to emphasize different aspects of who you are and who we are as a species.

MF: Can you talk about your working relationship with Michelle on set?

Simmons: It’s beyond a kind of shorthand. I mean, I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate multiple times with a lot of wonderful directors, and you do develop a mutual trust and a shorthand. In the case of Michelle, we already had the mutual trust and the mutual shorthand. Because I’m a fly on the wall every day when she’s writing for hours and we’re decompressing at night, I have a little extra awareness of the project itself. Then when you add the collaboration with our kids to the mix and with Michelle’s brother being the producer, it felt like this, especially for me, it felt like a family vacation in a way, which for Olivia and me, it was because we’re just acting and then we get to relax after that. For the producer and the director there’s never a moment’s rest, so it was a little more like a marathon for them.

'You Can't Run Forever' filmmaker Michelle Schumacher.

MF: Is there something specific that you are looking for from a director on set?

Simmons: It varies depending on the character, depending on the sort of vibe of the movie, comedy, drama, period piece or whatever it might be. But it all comes off the page to me, if it’s not on the page, even if it’s one of those scripts where you’re going to be improvising a lot, it needs to be there on the page, at least the framework. I have learned, not that I always make the best choices, but I’ve learned not to get involved in anything that I don’t believe and understand on the page who this guy is. Then there are often conversations before production and on the day and in between takes and at lunch about specifics, little specifics of why, where, when, and how with whatever the character is. But it all starts with, in this case, Michelle and Carolyn Carpenter, what they put down on the page.

Isabelle Anaya in 'You Can't Run Forever'.

Isabelle Anaya in ‘You Can’t Run Forever’. Photo: Lionsgate.

MF: Can you talk about working with actress Isabelle Anaya and were you involved in casting?

Simmons: That was Michelle, Randall (Schumacher) and the casting directors. I know that she saw a long list of young actresses, teenage actresses to play that character. She met with Isabelle twice, and I think a third time because she knew she was seeing something there that was what she wanted. If I’m remembering correctly, I think Isabel was cast before Fernanda was cast, Fernanda Urrejola who plays the mother. That ended up being a beautiful synchronicity, the casting of them, and obviously the rest of the movie too. Now my brain is already going to the casting of Olivia Simmons, our daughter in the movie, not to take away from Isabelle. She was a great find by Michelle, and she does such a wonderful job of finding the shadings of this teenage girl who’s suffering from anxiety and has endured horrible trauma in her life before this, and now this psychopath is terrorizing her on this overnight roller coaster ride of a movie. But in the case of our daughter, as they were writing that character, they were thinking it’s going to be a tiny little scene or two and had our daughter in mind. Then as the role organically became bigger, Michelle was like, “I don’t know if our sophomore in college acting student daughter, if we’re going to have to make her audition for the casting director for this.” But Olivia did the self-tape and the casting director put her at the top of the list of recommendations without attaching the name Simmons to being the director’s daughter, the director being Schumacher. She literally didn’t know that connection and said, “There’s a lot of good actors for this part, but would be my first choice, Olivia Simmons.” So, it took a lot of the onus off mom and dad in that casting.

Olivia Simmons in 'You Can't Run Forever'.

Olivia Simmons in ‘You Can’t Run Forever’. Photo: Lionsgate.

MF: What was it like for you personally to have this opportunity to make a movie with your family?

Simmons: It was unbelievable. I get goosebumps talking about it. It’s one of those things and then to have our son (Joe Simmons) who was still in college at the time do the full score for the film. We knew he had the chops to do that. He had contributed to Michelle’s earlier film (‘I’m Not Here’) a little bit with some additional music and sound design, and now he’s a fully formed film composer who was able to do everything. I’ve said before, Randall, her brother was the only producer. He was doing about 11 people’s jobs. Michelle was doing four- or five-people’s jobs at least, and Joe was doing a few people’s jobs being the entire music department. Then Olivia and I were merely one person’s job each portraying somebody else. It felt like a family vacation in a way, especially because we were shooting in Missoula, Montana, which is where my last stop growing up was and where my parents retired and lived out their days. So, there’s a lot of fond memories there.

Ben Affleck as Christian Wolff in 'The Accountant.'

Ben Affleck as Christian Wolff in ‘The Accountant.’ Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures.

MF: Finally, I’m a big fan of ‘The Accountant,’ and my favorite scene was when Ben Affleck’s character had a gun to your head, and your character is begging for his life and says, “I’ve been a good dad. I’m a lousy agent, and I’ve been a weak man. But that, I didn’t screw up. That I got right.” Can you talk about shooting that scene, if you were pleased with how the first movie turned out, and what fans can expect from the upcoming sequel, ‘The Accountant 2’?

Simmons: Yeah, absolutely. That scene, that’s another one I get goosebumps about because Ben and I are both dads. Gavin O’Connor, the director is a dad. That scene, we shot so many different little shades of that scene. There were some (takes) where I was emotional, but I think in the final cut that we see in the movie, I was just blubbering about because a guy’s got a gun to my head, and this might be the end. What you’re thinking about is your kids, of course. That is such a beautiful theme in Bill Dubuque’s script and in Gavin’s and in the sequel, it’s very much so the same. There was one take in that where Chris has the gun to my head and says, “Do you have kids?” During one take Ben just said, “What are their names?” I said my kids’ names, and they were not going to keep that in the movie, but it fueled the next several takes in providing that emotion. I loved that film, love the sequel and the way that it continues in a very different way, examining the brothers, the relationship of brothers, with is fathers and brothers being the primary relationships in both of those movies. Ben and Jon (Bernthal) are so great. I can’t wait to see the second one.

What is the plot of ‘You Can’t Run Forever’?

A teenage girl (Isabelle Anaya) suffering from anxiety due to a tragic event from her past finds herself hunted through the woods by a sociopath (J. K. Simmons) on a murderous rampage.

Who is in the cast of ‘’You Can’t Run Forever’?

  • J. K. Simmons as Wade
  • Allen Leech as Eddie
  • Fernanda Urrejola as Jenny
  • Isabelle Anaya as Miranda
  • Olivia Simmons as Emily
  • Graham Patrick Martin as Deputy Dwyer
  • Max Garfin as Ben
  • Nathan Vincenti as Davis

Andrew Moloney walks back retirement talk, demands rematch with Pedro Guevara

Junior bantamweight contender Andrew Moloney has declared he wants to continue his boxing career following his hotly contested loss to Mexican veteran Pedro Guevara at the RAC Arena in Perth, Western Australia last Sunday, local time.

Boxing on the undercard of the vacant IBF lightweight title fight between Vasiliy Lomachenko and George Kambosos Jr, the 33-year-old Australian got off to a flyer in the first half of the fight before Guevara, 34, began to rally.

Moloney closed the show with a big 12th round but it proved too little, too late on the scorecards. Judge Samantha Bulner favored Moloney with a score of 116-113, while judges Humberto Olivares and Zanashir Taznaa both had the bout 115-113 for Guevara.

In the aftermath, Moloney said he was hanging up the gloves.

“I felt in total control. I did what I had to do in there tonight just to get through the rounds and win,” a dismayed Moloney (26-4, 16 knockouts) said in the ring.

“I don’t want to make excuses but I went into this fight with a torn bicep. I couldn’t throw that left hook unless I needed to – but I didn’t feel like I needed to throw it because I was in total control.

“I just want to say thank you to Top Rank, thank you for my team for everything you’ve done for me.

“But I’m done with this sport. That’s the last you’ll see of me.”

The Ring shifted Moloney down to number six in their 115-pound rankings following the loss and elevated Guevara (42-4-1, 22 KOs) to number five.

After four days of thought, Moloney had a change of heart.

In a statement on social media, he said: “Sunday was an emotional day and I needed time to reflect before saying anything further.

“I have watched the fight back and believe now, as I did on the night, that I 100% deserved to have my hand raised.

“Those who have followed my career and know me know that I’m not a bad sport or a sore loser.

“I let my emotions get the best of me and I certainly could have handled the situation better.

“However, that is easier said than done when I have given my all to this sport for over 20 years and so much is on the line.”

Moloney stressed that their is little money to be made boxing in the lighter weight classes and a loss like this can have a massive impact on future earnings.

“Most people don’t understand that the outcome of a fight like this is life-changing,” said Moloney, who was contesting for the vacant WBC interim belt.

“The financial difference is hundreds of thousands of dollars as a champion, compared to thousands of dollars without a belt.”

In a three-fight series with Joshua Franco in 2020-2021, Moloney went 0-2 with 1 no-contest in desperately close fights for the secondary WBA ‘regular’ title.

The no-contest result in their rematch still sticks in his craw after a phantom headbutt was ruled by referee Russell Mora to have caused the swelling to Franco’s eye that caused the fight to be stopped after two rounds.

Video footage shows a legal punch from Moloney doing the damage.

“Having been robbed of world title before – I’m still waiting to see that headbutt – my frustration boiled over,” Moloney said of his passion boiling over on the night.

“Congratulations to Pedro Guevara and his team. He is a true Mexican warrior and I respect him and what he has achieved during his career.

“A rematch with Guevara is the only way I can come to peace with this situation. In my mind, Guevara is holding onto my belt.

“In the ring, he said he would give me the rematch. My team also spoke with the WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman straight after the fight and he also said he would honor a rematch.”

If terms can be reached for a second go-round, it would likely take place six months down the track.

“I entered the ring with a torn biceps tendon and I will first need to have surgery to repair the injury,” Moloney said. “I will then start my recovery so that I can enter the rematch with two strong arms.

“Rest assured, I will win and become a two-time world champion.”

Video: Jaleel Willis rushes Cedric Doumbe as brawl nearly breaks out at Bellator Paris weigh-ins

Cedric Doumbe and Jaleel Willis nearly started their fight 24 hours early after chaos erupted on stage at the Bellator Paris weigh-ins.

The welterweights didn’t even get a chance to engage in the customary faceoff before a physical altercation took place. As Doumbe set foot on the scale, Willis came over shouting and immediately shoved the former GLORY kickboxing champion.

Cooler heads prevailed but only momentarily as Doumbe then returned the favor with a shove to Willis after the fighters were finally brought together for the faceoff. Despite the simmering bad blood, one more attempt was made the bring the fighters together and it looked like tensions had calmed down enough for a quick staredown between the fighters.

With Dan Hardy between them, Doumbe and Willis were still jawing at each other, but it appeared the turmoil was over.

That changed in an instant after Willis ducked under the security team previously holding him back and he rushed at Doumbe and returned the shove from earlier. Security rushed in to keep the fighters separated before a full-on brawl could break out on stage.

Despite the ill will between the co-main event fighters, they re-joined Bellator commentator Chael Sonnen on stage a few moments later for an interview.

“F*ck the people’s favorite fighter,” Willis said about Doumbe after the faceoff. “This n**** delusional as f*ck. This man believes he can knock out Anthony Pettis. Are you serious right now? Ya’ll f*cking crazy. Putting hands on this man is the best thing I did all week.”

Doumbe and Willis look to settle their bad blood when the meet in the co-main event at Bellator Paris on Friday.

Arab League calls for UN peacekeepers in occupied Palestinian territory | Israel War on Gaza News

Arab leaders accuse Israel of obstructing Gaza ceasefire efforts and demand an end to its war on Palestinian territory.

The Arab League has called for a United Nations peacekeeping force in the occupied Palestinian territory at a summit dominated by Israel’s continuing deadly assault of the Gaza Strip.

The meeting of Arab heads of state and government convened in Bahrain on Tuesday more than seven months into Israel’s offensive in Gaza that has convulsed the wider region.

The “Manama Declaration” issued by the 22-member bloc called for “international protection and peacekeeping forces of the United Nations in the occupied Palestinian territories” until a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict is implemented.

It called for an immediate end to fighting in the Gaza Strip and blamed Israeli “obstruction” for failed negotiations for a ceasefire.

“We stress the need to stop the Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip immediately, withdraw the Israeli occupation forces from all areas of the Strip [and] lift the siege imposed on it,” the statement said.

The statement blamed Israel for the war continuing.

“We strongly condemn Israel’s obstruction of cease-fire efforts in the Gaza Strip and its continued military escalation by expanding its aggression against the Palestinian city of Rafah, despite international warnings of the disastrous humanitarian consequences,” it said.

President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt, mediating between Hamas and Israel along with Qatar and the United States, also said Israel was evading efforts to reach a ceasefire.

“Those who think that security and military solutions are able to secure interests or achieve security [are] delusional,” el-Sisi told the summit before its conclusion.

In Gaza’s southern city of Rafah, a widely criticised Israeli ground operation is under way. More than a million displaced Palestinians had sought shelter in the area, after they were forced to flee their homes in other parts of Gaza that had come under intense Israeli bombardment since October. Approximately 600,000 people have fled the area since Israel launched its assault earlier this month, according to the UN.

The Arab League statement also reiterated a longstanding call for a two-state solution along Israel’s borders before the 1967 war, with East Jerusalem as the Palestinian capital.

The declaration called on “all Palestinian factions to join under the umbrella of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO),” which is dominated by Hamas’s political rivals, Fatah.

The Arab League said it considered the PLO “the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people”.

Israel’s assault has killed at least 35,272 people, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, and severe Israeli restrictions on food, water, fuel and humanitarian supplies has caused dire food shortages and the threat of famine to spread from the north to the south.

The Arab League also “strongly condemned the attacks on commercial ships”, referring to dozens of attacks on vital shipping lanes in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden launched by Yemen’s Houthi rebels.

The Iran-aligned Houthis say they are attacking ships linked to Israel in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. The Arab League said the attacks “threaten freedom of navigation, international trade, and the interests of countries and peoples of the world”.

The declaration added the Arab nations’ commitment to “ensuring freedom of navigation in the Red Sea” and surrounding areas.

The Arab League was founded in 1945 to promote regional cooperation and resolve disputes. However, it is widely seen as toothless and has long struggled to help solve conflicts in the region.

An Arab-Israeli war in 1967 saw Israel seize the Palestinian territories of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.

Israel had annexed East Jerusalem, and successive Israeli governments have encouraged the construction of settlements in the Palestinian territories.

Under international law, the Palestinian territories remain occupied, and Israeli settlements in East Jerusalem and the West Bank are considered illegal.

South Africa seeks halt to Israel’s Gaza offensive

South Africa is asking the UN’s top court to order Israel to stop its military offensive in Rafah in southern Gaza.

It is presenting its case at a two-day hearing at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague. Israel is to deliver its response at the court on Friday.

South Africa is also seeking to force Israel to allow “unimpeded access” to Gaza for aid workers, journalists and investigators.

The court is already considering a case brought by South Africa in January accusing Israel of committing genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza. Israel rejected the claim as false and “grossly distorted”.

Israel began its attack on Hamas in Rafah 10 days ago, amid warnings from the UN and others of a grave risk to civilians. More than a million displaced people had been taking refuge in Rafah and nearly 600,000 have fled from there since the start of the operation.

South Africa’s application to the court accuses Israel of carrying out “genocidal” operations in Rafah and elsewhere in Gaza, and says that it “must be ordered to stop”.

Addressing the court at the start of the hearing, South African barrister Vaughan Lowe KC said that “evidence of appalling crimes and atrocities is literally being destroyed and bulldozed, in effect wiping the slate clean for those who’ve committed these crimes and making a mockery of justice”.

Israel says its offensive in Rafah is necessary in order to destroy the last remaining Hamas battalions which are based there and to rescue some 130 remaining Israeli hostages which it believes are being held there.

In January, in a highly charged case which was closely watched around the world, the ICJ ordered Israel to take measures to prevent potentially genocidal acts in Gaza. It also ordered Israel to do more to enable the provision of aid to the people there.

The then president of the court, Joan Donoghue, told the BBC last month that the ICJ did not decide that there was a plausible case for genocide, but rather that the Palestinians had a right to be protected from genocide, as claimed by South Africa.

The ICJ is not expected to deliver a ruling on the genocide case for several years. Its rulings are legally binding, but in practice unenforceable by the court.

The latest application is the third which South Africa, whose governing party has a long history of solidarity with the Palestinian cause, has filed with the ICJ against Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Israel began its offensive in Gaza after gunmen from the ruling Palestinian group Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israel on 7 October, killing about 1,200 people and taking 252 others hostage.

More than 35,270 people have been killed by Israel in the war in Gaza since then, according to the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry.

Warped Russian troops returning as ‘sex sadists’ forcing Putin to give wives chilling manual on ‘putting up with abuse’

TWISTED Russian troops returning as “sex sadists” from the frontlines have forced Vladimir Putin to introduce a chilling manual for wives to adjust to the abuse.

The training guide highlights the profound psychological changes faced by soldiers during the war – and asks wives to “put up with abuse”.

Women have been told to give their traumatised men a chance to “thaw out” after returning alive from Putin’s illegal war where hundreds of thousands have died so far.

They have been asked to understand and put up with their partners’ intolerance and aggressive forms of sex.

They must show empathy and support to their husbands even if they are being violent, the guide advises.

It reads: “Changes may manifest themselves in temporary intolerance to touch and decreased sexual desire.

“However, they can also be expressed in increased sexual arousal, the need for frequent sexual acts, and a predisposition to aggressive forms of sex.”

Sexual violence has been among the top traits displayed by Russian men returning from the Ukrainian war where rape has actively been used as a weapon.

Sergei Shakhmarov, a former Wagner mercenary who fought for Putin, was found guilty of raping two schoolgirls aged between 10 and 12 in Novosibirsk, Russia

The disgraced fighter, 42, was sentenced to 17 years in a maximum security prison.

Yury Gavrilov, another Putin’s recruit, allegedly lured an underaged girl to his flat to rape and torture her.

Chilling CCTV footage showed the paedo guiding the child, 11, to his ground-floor flat in Sol-Iletsk in Russia’s Orenburg region.

He was arrested the same evening – and was later seen with a bloody face after cops beat him up for the alleged crime.

He served in Wagner’s mercenary army after being freed from a jail sentence by Putin.

The guide – created by the pro-war organisation All-Russian People’s Front – tells men returning from war may require psychological help.

Women are asked not to force returning soldiers to experience of the war horror.

They must not criticise them even if they behave inappropriately, the guide says.

They have also been asked not to compare them to other men who may have adapted more easily.

Key points in the Russian manual

THE warped guide has been criticised by activists and campaigners as misogynistic. Here are some of the guidelines for wives mentioned in the book:

  • Do not say you “understand” them but reply with: “I can’t even imagine what you went through.”
  • Put your hand out and wait for as long as necessary so that your spouse can extend his hand to you in response
  • You will respond to his desire and listen. Learn to listen to silence and just be there
  • It is not recommended to approach him abruptly, from behind.
  • It is better to speak in a quiet voice first, and then approach and touch him.
  • If he doesn’t mind, hug him more often.
  • Tell your husband that PTSD is a normal reaction of the body after a special military operation and professional help can help deal with it.
  • Make sure he doesn’t blame himself.

The manual has been criticised by Alena Popova who said Russian women were being expected to solve the mess created by Putin’s war.

She said: “In essence, women are told to ‘suck it up, you have to be there no matter what he does’.

“But a woman should not endure everything because her husband has PTSD.

“They have been asked to endure and obey. But women will not tolerate this in silence and their voices are getting louder.”

She complained the pro-Kremlin manual asked women to be “proud” of their returning partners and support them – “even if they use violence”.

“Any kind of violence can never be justified,” she added.
